Prof. Nick Polydorides
Nick is the Chair of Computational Engineering at the University of Edinburgh. He holds a BEng in Electrical Engineering from UMIST (1998), an MSc in Computing from the University of Oxford (1999), and a PhD in image reconstruction for Electrical Impedance Tomography from the University of Manchester (2002). Prior to joining the faculty at Edinburgh, he held postdoctoral research positions at the University of Manchester (Department of Mathematics) and MIT (Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems), and served as an Assistant Professor at the Cyprus Institute. He previously served as the Head of the Institute for Digital Communications (2017–2022) and was a Turing Fellow in Data Science at the Alan Turing Institute from 2016 to 2020.
Alumni
Former Postdoctoral Researchers:
-
Dr. Yue Wu
Dr. Yue Wu is currently a faculty member at the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Strathclyde University. Previously, she was a Postdoctoral Associate in our group focusing on randomised algebra for structured computations, supported via EPSRC grant EP/R041431/1. She holds a PhD from Loughborough University specializing in random periodic solutions to stochastic PDEs. Her broader research interests include numerical analysis, uncertainty quantification, and stochastic analysis. [Webpage]
Former PhD Students:
-
Dr. Robert Lung
Completed his PhD on the quantitative imaging of gases dispersed in the atmosphere using optical remote sensing measurements. During his doctoral studies, he developed the Atmospheric Dispersion Imaging with Off-Beam Signals (ADIOS) framework, a variant of Differential Absorption Lidar (DIAL) that significantly improves performance in optically thick environments. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics from the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and an MSc in Statistics with Data Science from the University of Edinburgh, with core research interests spanning randomised linear algebra and high-dimensional probability frameworks. [Thesis]
-
Dr. Xiaohan Li
Dr. Xiaohan Li is currently a postdoctoral researcher within the Advanced Manufacturing group at ETH Zurich. She completed her PhD focusing on online computational models for powder bed fusion in additive manufacturing, with a research emphasis on surrogate modeling, machine learning, and process digital twins. She holds an MSc in Control Systems from Imperial College London and a BEng from Southwest Jiaotong University. [Thesis]
-
Dr. Dimitris Kamilis
Completed his PhD on stochastic models for low-frequency Maxwell's equations with an application focus on Controlled Source Electromagnetics (CSEM). Prior to this, he earned a Master of Science in Computational Science and Engineering from Umeå University and a degree in Theoretical Physics from Aristotle University. [Thesis]
