Welcome
Welcome to the homepage of the Computational Imaging & Data Analytics Group at the School of Engineering of the University of Edinburgh. The group is led by Prof. Nick Polydorides, Chair of Computational Engineering.
Overview
Our research group develops advanced mathematical and computational frameworks to model, image, and control complex engineering and physical systems. Our current work is structured around three core pillars:
- Gas concentration Tomography: Advancing the computational imaging of gas dispersion processes through optical radiative transport theory, with a particular focus on turbulent gas plumes and combustion dynamics.
- Streaming Additive Manufacturing Analytics: Developing data-driven, in-situ monitoring algorithms for 3D printing processes to detect defects and analyse material deposition in real time.
- Probabilistic Numerics for Edge Computing: Leveraging randomised numerical linear algebra (RandNLA) to significantly lower memory footprints and accelerate approximate algorithms for real-time edge devices.
Interested in joining us?
We welcome inquiries from highly motivated individuals eager to bridge rigorous mathematical theory with advanced computational applications. If you possess a strong foundational background in the mathematical sciences and are looking to pursue a PhD focused on inverse problems, numerical analysis, or RandNLA, please get in touch to discuss potential projects.
