Welcome

These are the webpages of the Computational Imaging & Data Analytics Group in the School of Engineering at the University of Edinburgh. The group is led by Dr Nick Polydorides, Reader (Associate Professor) in Computational Engineering.

Overview

Our research interests are in real-time computational modelling of physical and engineering systems and inverse problems for tomographic imaging. Central to our work is the framework of randomised numerical linear algebra, which replaces conventional deterministic algebraic operations with faster and cheaper to compute estimations, making it suitable for large-scale scientific computing problems at the edge and/or with restricted time budgets.

Currently we are working on:

  • Atmospheric gas dispertion imaging with optical backscattered data. This has applications in homeland security and grenhouse gas emission measurements.

  • Online, heat transport and phase change simulation. This finds applications in powder bed fusion additive manufacturing.

  • Randomised numerical linear algebra for real-time scientific simulation and image-based analytics. Applications in numerical computing for PDEs and inverse problems.

  • Data fusion and compression for kinematic modelling. This work is applicable to assisted living monitoring systems and robotics.

Interested in joining us?

We wellcome applications from skilled and motivated individuals with interests spanning the above areas. Please get in touch if you have a background in computational sciences (preferably an MSc) and would like to join our group as a PhD student.
